1.  New Macau Meetings, Incentives and Special Events Association – MISE

Macau has welcomed a new industry association – Macau Meetings, Incentives and Special Events or MISE.

According to MISE, while there are many associations in Macau, most of them are focused on exhibitions and none of them covered the three segments of meetings, incentives and special events. With more fascinating new venues coming online, it is vital to build awareness as international buyers do not understand Macau’s potential and capability, added MISE.

2.   Tourism contributes US$7.2 trillion to global economy in 2015

According  to the annual Economic Impact Report 2016 by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the tourism sector added 7.2 million jobs to the global economy and contributed over US$ 7.2 trillion to worldwide GDP last year, or 9.8 per cent of global GDP.

WTTC reported that travel and tourism also supported a total of 284 million jobs in 2015, which means it now supports, directly and indirectly, one in 11 jobs on the planet.

The sector’s direct contribution to GDP growth outpaced overall GDP country growth in 127 of the 184 countries covered by the research. This trend was most marked in countries including Iceland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Uganda.

The growth of the sector has been attributed to a worldwide increase in middle-class households, an ageing population, which tends to travel more, and growing connectivity between destinations, making travel more accessible and affordable.

In 2016, the sector is forecasted to grow by 3.5 per cent in total contribution to GDP, and is again expected to outpace global economic growth for the sixth consecutive year.

3.   Abu Dhabi host of XL International Workshop 2016

Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre hosted the 2016 edition of the XL International Workshop, dedicated to decision makers and professionals from the association congresses and venues industry.

The workshop was launched in Glasgow in 2003, and on alternate years, it is hosted for organisations that hold rotating conferences within Europe.

This year’s three-day workshop drew 16 senior executives from international associations who are organising conferences of 3,000 delegates and above as well as representatives of 14 venues from around the world.

4.   Big thanks to Club Melbourne!

Melbourne’s ambassadors have been thanked after helping double the economic value of international conferences to the city in 2015. The Club Melbourne Ambassadors helped secure 13 international conferences worth AUD$50 million (USD38.4m), which was double the value of conferences won in 2014. The 13 international conferences secured in 2015 will take place over the next four years, and cover a broad range of fields including sport, engineering, medicine and science.

Some of the wins include the Ecocity World Summit in 2017, the World Congress of Science and Football 2019 and the Commonwealth Law Conference 2017.

Since the programme’s inception 10 years ago, Club Melbourne Ambassadors have delivered 108 international conferences, contributing more than AUD620m to the regional economy.

5.   Tour Adelaide Convention Centre virtually

The Adelaide Convention Centre has launched Australia’s largest Google Virtual Tour, while also becoming the first Australian convention centre to adopt the technology across the entire building to assist clients in planning their event.

The Google Virtual Tour incorporates 316 panoramic photos, built from 3792 separate images of the expanded Centre and showcases all 15,000sqm of the interior over three levels including external views of North Terrace and the Riverbank precinct.

Visitors can also tour around the perimeter of the Centre and along North Terrace using Google Street View.

The 360 degree navigation technology works like Street View so viewers have complete control of their experience and are free to explore what most interests them.
