GainingEdge Expands Service Repertoire with Film Commission Consulting

30 July 2013 | Melbourne

Since its establishment nine years ago, GainingEdge has made its name in the international meetings industry as an international business events consultancy with a global network and blue ribbon clientele, in both convention bureau and convention centre segments.

With immediate effect, GainingEdge will add a new service – Film Commission Consultancy – through a new partnership inked with Ana Ilić and Milica Božanić, both from Belgrade, Serbia.

In the past five years, Ana Ilić has been running the Serbia Film Commission which was established under her leadership as the first and still the only film commission in the South East European region. She completed trainings for film commissioners with the Association of Film Commissioners International. Previously, Ana has worked for Booze Allen Hamilton and other international consulting companies on USAID funded economic development projects in the Balkans, primarily on tourism and media sector development.

Ana will be supported by Milica Božanić who joins GainingEdge as Associate – Film Commission Consulting. Milica’s international development career started in 2008 when she joined the USAID project in Serbia where she served as tourism and film sector specialist. She extensively worked on the development and capacity building of the Serbia Convention Bureau and Serbia Film Commission.

Said Ilić: “Film commissions contribute to buoyant, competitive, sustainable local economies through the development of the film industry and film-related activities. Attracting film and video production generates locally realized benefits from hiring local crews and talents, renting local equipment, using hotel rooms, rental cars, catering services or any number of goods and services supplied on location.”

“Each new film being shot locally translates to millions of dollars in investments in the national economy, and in limitless free advertising for the tourism industry,” added Božanić.

Earlier this year, Serbia hosted its first Korean film production. “The Tenor Lirico Spinto” traces the career of Bae Jae Chul who is one of Korea’s most famous opera singers. Locations in Serbia were used to depict Saarbruken, Germany. The music for the movie was also ‘made in Serbia.’ Other recent international films shot in Serbia include Coriolanus directed by Ralph Finnes, The Raven with John Cusak, Therese with Jessica Lange, Ironclad:Battle for blood, Lock Out with Guy Pearce and Maggie Smith, Italian RAI TV series L’ultimo papa re, Il restauratore, Scandalo della Banca Romana and TV commercials for such international brands as Ikea, Nokia, Swatch, Davidoff, Hewlett Packard, etc

GainingEdge CEO Gary Grimmer said that GainingEdge will offer a full range of consulting services related to the establishment of a film commission. The services are divided into three phases – Planning, Activation and Development. In addition, GainingEdge also offers services and programs for existing film commissions. These can range from film incentive programmes to the development of tool kits for scouting trips; and from ROI and economic benefits monitoring to film tourism.

Grimmer said, “Film commissions are not dissimilar to convention bureaus. Both are promoting destinations. While convention bureaus target meeting planners and coordinate local hospitality suppliers, film commissions target production companies and coordinate with both local film production and hospitality suppliers. We also think that in the future, just as more convention bureaus may develop major events promotion departments, some will also develop film promotion departments.”

He added, “Film is a very dynamic way to stimulate local creative economies and draw attention to destinations. Our global consulting experience combined with the expertise of Ana Ilić and Milica Božanić makes GainingEdge uniquely qualified to support the development of film commissions or film bureaus.”
