Project Brief: African Society of Association Executives (AfSAE)
GainingEdge’s experience in Africa over the past decade includes providing the activation strategy for the South African National Convention Bureau, as well as bureaus in three South African provinces.
During our engagements with the industry in Africa we came to realise that there was a unique opportunity to strengthen Africa’s civil society while also developing a more robust regional and international meetings industry for all of Africa.
Working with our clients and counterparts in Africa, GainingEdge helped to establish the African Society of Association Executives in 2015. While in Johannesburg supporting Meetings Africa, we helped to coalesce a group of organisations which agreed to support the new society. Next, we helped assemble a meeting of African association leaders who were at Meetings Africa to explore their interest in starting the association.
With the resounding support of the association leaders, we helped to convene an establishment board and began the process of building the society, working with the board to develop articles of incorporation, governance and operating procedures, membership criteria and promotional strategies, an office, incorporation, website and communications and plans for future annual educational conferences.
AfSAE has since organised 4 annual educational conferences, formed a partnership with ASAE (the American society) on an association management certification program, enrolled over 600 members and is publishing a monthly on-line newsletter with content primarily focussed on association management issues and strategies.
The growth and strengthening of civil society in Africa is essential to enhancing the depth and pace of the continent’s continuing economic transformation. AfSAE will help to build association management professionalism and the establishment of new associations. This in turn will help Africa to build stronger professional competencies, improve policies and practices, spur social and economic development and drive the extension of stronger global networks.
GainingEdge is a founding sponsor of AfSAE and our CEO, Gary Grimmer voluntarily provides ongoing strategic support and participation in training programs as part of our CSR program. Learn more about AfSAE at www.afsae.org
